Class Descriptions

beginner fundamentals/trial class

In our Fundamentals Class, we focus on helping you build a solid foundation in jiu-jitsu through controlled drilling of techniques, without the pressure of live sparring. This is especially true for your trial class, where there is no sparring, allowing you to learn and move at your own pace while getting comfortable on the mats.

Each class begins with a warmup, followed by dedicated time for drilling techniques and live positional training, finishing with a cool-down and stretching. We encourage you to ask questions throughout, as it’s important for your growth and understanding.

To ensure safety, proper progression, and confidence, sparring is restricted to full members only. This structured approach teaches the core principles and movements essential to the art, helps refine your technique, reduces the risk of injury, and prepares you to move forward into live sparring and our all-levels classes once you’re ready. BLACK TEAM GI IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS.

Adult All Levels

This class is open to all students 16 years or older and the techniques and teaching will focus on the basics of Jiu-Jitsu as well as more advanced techniques for those that are blue and above.

Although this class is open to All-Levels it is designed for students who have grasped the core concepts of bjj. The techniques shown in this class build upon the basics and focus on specific details, styles, and strategies within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with an emphasis on active drills and live sparring.

At SJJA, one of the most unique aspects of our training is our 10/5 minute sparring rounds after every technical lesson. This unique structure is proven to transform a students learning and development in a more practical way.

Variety builds adaptability: You’ll roll with partners of all sizes and skill levels, sharpening your timing and awareness in real situations.

Freedom to pace yourself: Beginners can roll, rest, reflect, then go again. Advanced students can experiment, refine their game, and push stamina.

Lower risk, not higher: Contrary to what some think, more rounds often mean fewer injuries. Your body warms up, you find rhythm, and you avoid the “all-out” mentality that shorter sparring blocks encourage.

Real application: Live rounds are where techniques come alive. You learn how to attack, defend, and adjust under real pressure.

Mind and body conditioning: With 10 rounds, you build resilience, endurance, and the ability to stay calm and technical even when fatigued.

Research in motor learning and combat sports supports this: frequent, varied practice accelerates skill development, and regular controlled exposure reduces injury risk while improving adaptability. Our round structure isn’t just conditioning—it’s one of the most effective ways to truly learn jiu-jitsu.

SATURDAY Open Mat

Come ready to push yourself in a fun, supportive atmosphere where everyone’s chasing the same goal—improvement! This is where endurance meets technique, and where you leave not just tired, but better than when you walked in. GI IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS. SJJA MEMBERS ONLY.
